IT’D ONLY BEEN ABOUT A MONTH, but Ginny felt so at home at the fishing lodge that she really hoped to stay on indefinitely. And perhaps it could happen. Jacqueline had called earlier today, raving about what a wonderful time she was having in Seattle. Adrian seemed to have pulled out all the stops for her, showing her the highlights of Seattle.

“He took me to the top of the Space Needle the other night,” Jacqueline had told her this morning.

“How fun.” Ginny had continued folding towels while she listened to Jacqueline gushing. “I’ve been up there a few times. Amazing view.”

“Well, have you ever eaten up there? In the Loupe Lounge?”

Ginny stopped folding. “Adrian took you to the Loupe Lounge?”

“Yes! It’s the most amazingly beautiful restaurant in the world. You must’ve been there lots of times. Don’t you love it?”

“I’ve never actually dined there.” Ginny didn’t mention that Adrian had asked her many a time. But, worried it was an “engagement” sort of restaurant, she had always declined. “I’ve heard it’s quite expensive.”

“I’ll say. But it’s so romantic. I think it’s totally worth it. I can’t believe you’ve never eaten there. You really should, Ginny.”

“Yeah, right.” She shook out a towel, carefully folding it. “I’m glad you enjoyed it, but I should get to work.”

“You don’t mind that I’m dating Adrian, do you?”

“Not at all. Like I told you, Jacqueline, Adrian and I are only friends.” Ginny pulled more warm towels from the dryer, trying not to feel aggravated. Did Jacqueline really think Ginny was her rival?

“So if Adrian and I got serious, you’d be okay with that?”

“Of course. I’d be very happy for both of you,” Ginny reassured her. “But I have a lot to do today. You know it’s Saturday and extra busy with the summer season. I’m sure it must be for you too.” And then she had told Jacqueline goodbye and hung up. It kind of irked her that Jacqueline felt the need to communicate all this to Ginny. Did she think Ginny would get jealous or feel bad to be missing out on all that big-city fun? Because she wasn’t and didn’t!

Still, as Ginny stayed super busy all day, more grateful than ever that Jack had given her the green light to hire another housekeeper—as soon as she had time—she couldn’t help but feel a little annoyed at Jacqueline. And worried for Hotel Jackson. Jacqueline hadn’t mentioned a word about Diana. That in itself was mysterious. But perhaps Jacqueline was doing such a wonderful job that things had smoothed over. And maybe Diana approved of Jacqueline as a potential daughter-in-law. If so, Ginny really would be happy for all of them. Still, it was puzzling.

Fortunately, Ginny had too much to get done to obsess over Jacqueline today. And by the end of the day, although she was exhausted, she was not ready to turn in. After the last of the fishermen cleared out of the lodge and off the porch, she went around straightening and tweaking, just like she always did in the evening.
